**Mechanism:**
Surface tension reduction: Detergents contain surfactants that significantly lower the surface tension of water, enabling superior wetting and penetration into fabrics, dishes, and surfaces to loosen embedded dirt, grease, and oils.
Emulsification and micelle formation: Surfactants aggregate into micelles that encapsulate hydrophobic soils (oils, fats, and particulates), dispersing them evenly in water so they can be rinsed away without re-depositing.
Chemical and enzymatic breakdown: Builders, chelating agents, and enzymes (protease, lipase, amylase) participate in hydrolysis, oxidation, and complexation reactions to break down stubborn protein, starch, and mineral-based stains at the molecular level.

**Application areas:**
Laundry cleaning: Removes dirt, stains, odors, and body soils from clothing, bedding, and textiles in household and commercial washing machines.
Dishwashing and kitchen cleaning: Effectively degreases plates, utensils, pots, and surfaces; suitable for both hand-washing liquids and automatic dishwasher formulations.
Household multi-surface cleaning: Used in all-purpose cleaners, floor cleaners, and bathroom products to eliminate grease, soap scum, and everyday grime.
Industrial and institutional cleaning: Applied in heavy-duty degreasing for metal parts, textile processing, food plants, and hospitality to handle tough industrial soils and ensure hygiene.

**Main categories:**
Anionic Detergents: Based on linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES); deliver powerful cleaning, rich foam, and cost-effectiveness, making them the most widely used in standard laundry powders and dish liquids.
Non-ionic Detergents: Primarily fatty alcohol ethoxylates (AEO/AE) and alkyl polyglucosides; excel in low-foam applications, hard-water tolerance, and grease removal, ideal for high-efficiency (HE) machines and industrial cleaners.
Amphoteric Detergents: Including cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) and cocoamphoacetate; mild, skin-friendly, and pH-balanced, commonly formulated into baby detergents, hand soaps, sensitive-skin products, and premium dishwashing liquids.
