Mechanism: Cell membrane disruption: Quaternary ammonium compounds, biguanides and phenolics integrate into the negatively charged lipid bilayer of bacteria, viruses and fungi, causing leakage of intracellular contents and immediate cell lysis. Protein denaturation and enzyme inactivation: Alcohols, aldehydes and biguanides rapidly unfold essential proteins and disable metabolic enzymes, stopping replication and vital cellular functions. Oxidative destruction: Chlorine compounds, peroxides and other oxidizers generate reactive species (hypochlorous acid, hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen) that oxidize lipids, proteins and nucleic acids, leading to irreversible microbial inactivation and death.
