Mechanism:
Surface tension reduction and spreading: Defoamers consist of compounds with lower surface tension than the foaming liquid. Upon contact, they spread rapidly across the air-liquid interface, displacing the stabilizing surfactant film and causing the foam lamellae to thin and destabilize.
Bubble film rupture: Active particles, such as hydrophobic silica or silicone droplets, penetrate the liquid film of the bubble. These particles act as “pinpricks,” creating localized structural weaknesses and physical discontinuities that cause the gas bubbles to coalesce and burst instantly.
Prevention of foam regeneration: By maintaining a persistent presence at the interface, antifoaming agents prevent the formation of stable elastic films during mechanical agitation, ensuring long-term suppression of new foam and improving processing efficiency.
Application areas:
Water treatment and environmental protection: Effectively controls excessive foam in municipal sewage plants, industrial wastewater treatment, and cooling towers to ensure smooth discharge and optimal aeration efficiency.
Paints, coatings, and inks: Eliminates micro-foam generated during grinding, mixing, and application (spraying, rolling, or brushing) to prevent surface defects such as pinholes, craters, and orange peel effects.
Pulp and paper industry: Utilized in pulping, bleaching, and paper machine wet-end processes to improve fiber drainage, enhance paper quality, and prevent machine downtime caused by air entrainment.
Textile and chemical processing: Suppresses foam in high-temperature dyeing, scouring, and finishing stages, ensuring uniform chemical penetration and preventing fabric staining or uneven coloration.
Main categories:
Silicone-Based Defoamers: Formulated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and hydrophobic particles; they offer extremely low surface tension and high chemical inertness, providing exceptional efficiency at very low dosages across various pH ranges.
Polyether and Non-silicone Defoamers: Primarily EO/PO block copolymers or fatty alcohols; these provide excellent compatibility with liquid systems without causing “silicone spot” issues, making them ideal for the fermentation, textile, and metalworking industries.
Mineral Oil-Based Defoamers: Composed of refined mineral oils and hydrophobic solids; cost-effective and highly stable, these are widely applied in architectural coatings, adhesives, and construction chemicals where high-volume foam control is required.
