Set up the comparison

Identify samples taken during mixing, after filling and during storage. Record temperature and pH at each point.

Measurements to record

Assay (% on a dry basis). Specify the drying and assay methods. Distinguish the free acid from the potassium salt. Moisture (% by mass). Check the inner bag seal when sampling. Test dispersion uniformity separately in the actual formulation. Record the sample ID and method revision for repeat testing.

Interpreting the results

Use an appropriate identity test to distinguish undissolved raw sorbic acid from later crystals. Appearance alone is insufficient to justify a dose change.

What to record

  • Sampling stage
  • Temperature
  • pH
  • Crystal observations
  • Identity check
