Can a grade designation predict service life?
Color after one extrusion does not establish service life. The roles of hindered phenols and other stabilizers must be verified separately.
Separate initial color from property retention after aging
Compare current and candidate stabilizer combinations in the same resin. Measure color after processing, then assess mechanical retention after application-relevant aging. Trace thermal history to each specimen ID.
Do we still need to evaluate 1010 if the recipe contains 168?
They act by different mechanisms. Compare each individually and in combination. Polyolefin heat stabilization: After a fixed number of extrusion passes, compare color, melt flow change and retention after aging. Long-term heat aging: After the specified exposure temperature and time, compare elongation and time to failure.
Checking Principal component assay and Melting range
Principal component assay (% by mass): Verify the identification and chromatographic methods. Melting range (°C): Check both the range and the method in the current grade specification. Volatiles (% by mass): Use the same test conditions and compare with the recorded storage conditions.
