Trial design and interpretation
Compare both blacks at equal loading in the same compound with matched mixing history, then record dispersion and cured properties. When iodine numbers match, use oil absorption and related data to interpret structure differences and confirm the result in the compound.
Recording Iodine adsorption number
Iodine adsorption number (g/kg): ENVO N330 premium-grade example: 82 ± 5. The published table cites an earlier standard. Apply the method edition and proposed grade agreed in the order. Oil absorption number: use the agreed method. Distinguish standard oil absorption from oil absorption of a compressed sample and identify the oil.
Does equal iodine adsorption mean equal reinforcement?
Compare oil absorption, particle structure and actual dispersion. Evaluate compounds at equal mixing energy. Tire compound reinforcement: Keep the compound and mixing process fixed. Measure Mooney viscosity, cure curve and abrasion resistance.
What to record
- Iodine adsorption number
- Oil absorption number
- Mixing history
- Modulus at specified elongation and tensile properties
