Trial design and interpretation

Fix resin, addition rate and trial throughput. Record temperature and torque over time and distinguish the onset of fusion from stable operation. Check the temperature used to measure raw material viscosity before interpreting the processing curves.

Recording Viscosity at 25 °C

Viscosity at 25 °C (mPa·s): Eastman 168 third-party typical value 66. State temperature and viscosity method. Third-party data are for comparison only. Relative density (Dimensionless): Eastman 168 third-party typical value 0.984. Relative to water at 20/20 °C. Do not treat this as measured density at another temperature.

Why might extrusion temperature need adjustment at equal plasticiser addition?

Compare solvation rate, resin particle size and shear. Repeat the torque curve using the actual resin. Flexible PVC calendering: At the same formulation and processing conditions, compare fusion time, calendered finish and hardness after aging.

What to record

  • Temperature and viscosity
  • Plasticizer loading
  • Torque curve
  • Steady throughput
