Why can the bottom of a bag differ when average manganese passes?

A passing whole-bag average can conceal high or low local values associated with particle size. Comparing only bottom samples exaggerates the difference.

Record sampling height and particle distribution

Use the same pattern to compare size and elemental manganese at the top, middle and bottom, retaining a composite. Repeat after simulated normal handling to see whether the variation consistently follows position.

Can a MnSO₄ label be treated as elemental Mn?

Check whether the label reports salt or elemental manganese and verify the lot’s hydration state. Manganese-source premixes: Sample at the beginning, middle and end of discharge. Compare carrier and manganese salt sizes and manganese distribution. Alternative source review: Check hydration state and impurities. Compare net delivered price using measured manganese content.

Checking Elemental manganese and Particle size

Elemental manganese (% by mass): Report total Mn or water-soluble Mn, the elemental analysis method and the hydration state. Particle size (µm / % sieve residue): Report sieve apertures and percentage passing. Make a composite sample from different bag positions and distinguish lumps from primary particles. Specified impurities (mg/kg): For the intended use and market, list each element, method and quantification limit. Request results for the stated batch.

What to record

  • Particle size distribution
  • Handling procedure
  • Sampling layer
  • Elemental manganese
