Can enzyme preparations be compared by mass alone?

FTU measures activity, not grams of preparation. Pre-pelleting potency need not survive cooling. Record the addition point for each formulation.

Verify activity across pelleting or post-pelleting spraying

Test pre-pelleting and post-cooling samples in parallel by the same method. Add a storage time point if needed. For post-spraying, sample before and after spraying and evaluate retention separately from pelleting.

Calculating activity retention across two stages

If the same substrate, method and dry-matter basis yield 1,000 FTU/kg before and 800 FTU/kg after pelleting, retention through that stage is 80%. This example is independent of commercial potency claims and feeding recommendations.

How should we choose powder, granules or a post-spray liquid?

Compare measured retained activity against pelleting temperature, post-spray equipment and mixing uniformity. Diets containing phytate: Record feedstock composition and baseline phytate phosphorus. Have the nutrition team assess the enzyme and target. Compatibility with pelleting: Measure activity before and after conditioning. Fix temperature, humidity, residence time and sampling procedure.

Checking Phytase activity and Retention after processing

Phytase activity (FTU/g or contract units): Specify the phytate substrate, pH, temperature and the unit defined by phosphorus release. Align differing assays before comparison. Retention after processing (%): Measure activity before and after processing by the same method and correct for moisture. Record temperature, residence time and cooling conditions. Preparation form (Ingredient declaration / % by mass): Specify carrier and active-ingredient basis. Assess powder, liquid and protected forms separately.

What to record

  • Enzyme activity method
  • Addition point
  • Pelleting conditions
  • Sampling stage
  • Residual enzyme activity
