Set up the comparison

Split one lot into two samples. Prepare both at the same powder-to-water ratio, temperature and mixing intensity. Start the clock when powder enters the water and compare viscosity at the same elapsed time.

Measurements to record

Hydration time (min). Use the same powder-to-water ratio, temperature and shear, and use the target viscosity as the endpoint. Viscosity under specified conditions (mPa·s). Fix solution concentration, temperature, hydration time, instrument and rotational speed. Record the sample ID and method revision for repeat testing.

Interpreting the results

Cut open the retained lumps and check for dry powder at the centre. Compare premixing and direct addition by wetting time and final viscosity. Take samples between powder addition and filling to see whether full hydration fits the production window.

What to record

  • Powder and water masses
  • Water temperature
  • Hydration time
  • Spindle speed
  • Viscosity
