Can percentages on lysine sulfate and hydrochloride be compared directly?

Salt mass, free lysine, crude protein and fermentation co-products describe different things. Total nitrogen includes non-lysine contributions.

Convert both reports to free-base mass

Express each COA as kilograms of L-lysine free base per kilogram of delivered product, then compare on the same delivered-price basis. List sulfate and other constituents separately for formulation review.

Comparing prices on a free-base basis

If two commercial products provide 550 kg and 650 kg of verified L-lysine free base per tonne, respectively, divide each delivered price per tonne by 550 or 650 as appropriate. Check the formulation effects of sulfate, moisture and other constituents separately.

Does higher crude protein mean a higher lysine content?

Crude protein includes other nitrogenous components. Check a specific L-lysine assay. Replacing a lysine source: Compare with lysine hydrochloride at the same L-lysine input. Account for sulfate and the other nutrient contributions. Fermentation product review: Request the specification, manufacturing description and amino acid profile. Check the calculation basis for non-lysine components.

Checking L-Lysine as free base and Sulfate

L-Lysine as free base (% as received): Use an analytical method specific to the L-amino acid. State whether the result is expressed as free base, salt or as-received product. Sulfate (% by mass): Calculate sulphate and elemental sulphur separately. Specify the analytical method and reporting basis. Moisture (% by mass): State the moisture or loss-on-drying method and the temperature and humidity at sampling. Compare the two measurements separately.
