Grain and feed preservation
Use a matrix of the same source and moisture. Track mold and quality indicators during storage.
Liquid spray application
Calibrate spray nozzle delivery by acid content. Check distribution at several points and verify wetted materials.
Purchase specifications and incoming inspection
Review these properties for the intended application grade. Example figures refer to the cited grade or source. Confirm the offered specification, packaging and lead time in the quotation. EFSA · Propionic acid and propionates in feed ↗
| Property | Unit | Published or agreed specification | Test conditions and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Propionic acid content | % by mass or titratable equivalents | Confirm for the proposed grade and project | State the acid equivalent, whether total or free acid is measured, the as-received or dry basis, and the analytical endpoint. |
| Density | g/mL | Confirm for the proposed grade and project | State measurement temperature and use measured density to convert the metered volume to feed mass. |
| Spray uniformity | Relative standard deviation (%) | Confirm for the proposed grade and project | Agree sampling points and sample count. Test both the target component in the mixture and the variation across samples. |
When approving a sample, record the grade, methods, limits and specification revision. On receipt, match the packing lot number to the lot-specific COA and record the measured values and release decision.
From samples to commercial delivery
Packaging and receiving
Specify free acid or formulated product, net weight and container material. Confirm carriage against the current SDS.
Storage and handling
Record seals and container condition at unloading. Verify compatibility with site pumps and pipework.
Sample and order lead times
State premix or pelleting trial size, replenishment quantity and receiving warehouse. Confirm MOQ, preparation time and plant arrival separately for samples, pallets and split orders.
Questions from the plant
Why retest the same acid quantity in a wetter raw material?
Review moisture, sealing, temperature and spray uniformity. Verify with retained samples stored under matched conditions.
Can a propionate salt replace the liquid acid at the same dose?
Recalculate active propionic acid equivalents. Review accompanying ions and the end use separately.
Report a delivery or batch issue
Include the order number, lot number from the package, label photos and inspection records for the affected lot. When retesting, check Propionic acid content, Density, Spray uniformity.
