Trial design and interpretation

Ask the supplier to state both loss on ignition and the basis of the assay. For example, with 5% loss on ignition and 98% purity on the ignited basis, the as-received assay is approximately 93.1% under the same mass-balance assumptions. Measure reactivity separately.

Recording Loss on ignition

Loss on ignition (Mass fraction): published granular grade ≤5.0%. Check ignition temperature, duration and weighing conditions. Verify that the test represents the activity grade offered. Acid-insoluble matter (Mass fraction): ENVO published granular grade ≤0.1%. Specify acid concentration and the method for assessing the filter residue.

Why can MgO assay appear higher after ignition?

Ignition changes sample mass. Request assay on the ignited basis and loss on ignition separately, then convert to a common basis. Neutralization feedstock: At the same temperature and particle size, use the customer’s method to compare time to the specified endpoint.

What to record

  • As-received mass
  • Loss on ignition
  • Assay basis
  • Activity under specified conditions
