Can equal tonnages of hydrochloric and sulfuric acid be exchanged?

A record of “one drum per shift” cannot be compared without net weight, concentration and raw-water conditions. Changing acid also changes the anion added.

Reconstruct the original neutralization demand

Convert both products to pure acid mass and neutralizing equivalents, then measure actual consumption to the same endpoint using the same water. Assess the effect of added sulfate downstream before comparing purchases.

Does a darker incoming acid mean lower acid strength?

Measure assay and relevant impurities and review container history. Colour alone does not support release. Water system pH adjustment: Compare acid demand and change in sulfate at target pH. Acid for industrial processing: For color- or metal-sensitive production, compare iron, color value and nonvolatile residue.

Checking Sulfuric acid content and Iron

Sulfuric acid content (% by mass): State on the COA that the result is expressed as H₂SO₄. Iron (mg/kg): Specify the method quantification limit and target control value. Nonvolatile residue (% by mass): Identify the sample conditions and specification revision.

What to record

  • Acid identity
  • Measured mass fraction
  • Water sample volume
  • Endpoint
  • Acid consumption in equivalents
