Industry guide / Water and environmental systems

Water Treatment and the Environment

Start with the water source, operating limits and treatment target. Compare coagulation, scale control, disinfection and wastewater treatment options against real water samples.

Water treatment clarifiers
01 / Coagulation and flocculation

Raw water turbidity rises and flocs settle slowly

Establish the conditions
Check raw-water turbidity and pH. For polyacrylamide, identify the ionic type before comparing grades.

Materials and their roles

Trial and comparison. Run a jar-test series on the same raw-water sample. Record clarification time, supernatant turbidity, pH and sludge volume. Compare product costs on the same active-content basis.

02 / pH, alkalinity and softening

Effluent pH or alkalinity fluctuates

Establish the conditions
Define the treatment objective, raw-water alkalinity and materials of construction.

Materials and their roles

Trial and comparison. Using the same water, record the amount of alkalinity added, the final pH and any floc or precipitate. Distinguish adjustment of pH from removal of hardness.

03 / Cooling water and membrane systems

Scale buildup reduces heat transfer

Establish the conditions
Identify the circuit or membrane system. Record hardness, cycles of concentration, wetted materials and discharge restrictions.

Materials and their roles

Trial and comparison. Sample the make-up and circulating water. Record temperature and concentration conditions, then assess mineral scale, fouling and metal corrosion separately.

04 / Oxidation and microbial control

Which materials are appropriate for disinfection or microbial control?

Establish the conditions
Identify the intended use: drinking water, a swimming pool or an industrial system. Check the approved use and equipment compatibility.

Materials and their roles

Trial and comparison. Define the target organisms, permitted application, monitoring equipment and material compatibility before assessing the treatment under its specified conditions.

05 / Dechlorination and adsorption

Residual chlorine or organics interfere with downstream treatment

Establish the conditions
Record the target contaminant, residual chlorine and flow. For carbon beds, check pore characteristics and replacement criteria.

Materials and their roles

Trial and comparison. Test residual-chlorine reduction separately from organic adsorption. For an adsorption bed, compare removal, pressure drop and the point at which replacement is needed.

06 / Sludge conditioning and biological treatment

Filter cake retains too much water

Establish the conditions
Separate sludge dewatering from denitrification. The first is evaluated by cake and filtrate quality; the second by carbon demand and biological response.

Materials and their roles

Trial and comparison. Compare dewatering aids using the same sludge, recording cake moisture and filtrate condition. In a separate denitrification trial compare usable carbon, process response and delivered cost.

07 / Phosphorus removal and pretreatment

Industrial effluent repeatedly exceeds the phosphorus target

Establish the conditions
Specify soluble phosphorus, influent pH, sludge-handling capacity and the effluent target for the industrial wastewater stream.

Materials and their roles

Trial and comparison. Using the same sample, pH, settling time and phosphorus analysis, compare final phosphorus, sludge yield and chemical cost at the required treatment endpoint.
