Sodium acetate

Chemical substance

For sodium acetate as a denitrification carbon source, compare anhydrous salt, trihydrate and solutions on the same available carbon basis.

01 / Applications and trials

Plan a trial for your application

Wastewater denitrification

Use actual wastewater and sludge to compare nitrogen removal and residual organics in the effluent.

Liquid carbon-source metering

Use the pumped liquid’s density, flow and COA to calculate active material delivered per unit volume.

02 / Quality and acceptance

Purchase specifications and incoming inspection

Review these properties when selecting and inspecting incoming material. Example figures refer to the cited grade or source. Confirm the offered specification, packaging and lead time in the quotation. U.S. EPA · Evaluation of external carbon sources for denitrification ↗

Property Unit Published or agreed specification Test conditions and checks
Sodium acetate assay % by mass Confirm against the offered grade and purchase specification Identify the hydrate or anhydrous reporting basis.
COD equivalent kg COD/kg product Confirm against the offered grade and purchase specification Distinguish a theoretical conversion from a value measured using the specified method.
Density g/mL Confirm against the offered grade and purchase specification For liquids only. State the temperature.

When approving a sample, record the grade, methods, limits and specification revision. On receipt, match the packing lot number to the lot-specific COA and record the measured values and release decision.

03 / Packaging and delivery

From samples to commercial delivery

Packaging and receiving

Specify moisture-resistant packaging for crystals. For solutions confirm unit net weight, tank and discharge connection.

Storage and handling

If crystallisation follows a change in transit temperature or concentration, use the grade-specific retest procedure.

Sample and order lead times

State treatment scale, trial quantity and acceptable packaging. Request minimum quantities, preparation times and arrival dates for lab samples, pilot lots and routine replenishment.

04 / Troubleshooting

Questions from the plant

Why do two carbon sources labelled “25%” give different denitrification costs?

Confirm concentration basis and COD equivalent, then compare unit nitrogen-removal cost in the same wastewater.

Does cloudiness in a liquid product establish expiry?

Check transit, temperature and the original retain. Test against the specification before deciding.

Report a delivery or batch issue

Include the order number, lot number from the package, label photos and inspection records for the affected lot. When retesting, check Sodium acetate assay, COD equivalent, Density.
