Trial design and interpretation
Record initial hardness, pH, temperature and test duration. If the untreated blank develops little scale, the test is unlikely to distinguish candidates. Redesign the comparison for representative operating conditions.
Recording Active component
Active component: use the agreed method. State whether the value refers to the acid molecule or sodium salt. Record solution density separately. Aqueous solution pH: use the agreed method. State whether the sample was used as supplied or specify its dilution.
Can suppliers be ranked by their stated calcium tolerance?
Align hardness, pH, temperature and the time used to assess turbidity. Verify the ranking using site water. High-calcium cooling water: Record calcium hardness, alkalinity, temperature and evaluation time when comparing deposit control.
What to record
- Water composition
- Deposits in blank
- Candidate concentration
- Endpoint reading
