Thermal interface sheets
Hold thickness and compression constant. Evaluate in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivity separately.
Electrically insulating, thermally conductive plastics
Use the same resin and filler volume fraction. Record melt viscosity, molding direction and insulation performance.
Purchase specifications and incoming inspection
Include the intended grade or current specification in the enquiry. Use the table to compare selection criteria and inspection conditions. The specification agreed by both parties defines the contractual limits. Momentive Technologies · Platelet and agglomerated boron nitride powder grades ↗
| Property | Unit | Published or agreed specification | Test conditions and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Particle size D50 | µm | Specify separate values for platelet and agglomerated grades. | State dry or wet method, dispersion energy and particle morphology, and record the heat-flow direction in the finished part. |
| Powder morphology | Morphology class | Specify the platelet or agglomerated form. | Check source and batch micrographs together with particle size at acceptance. |
| Composite thermal conductivity | W/(m·K) | Specify separately for each part orientation. | Record filler volume fraction, specimen thickness and measurement direction. |
When approving a sample, record the grade, methods, limits and specification revision. On receipt, match the packing lot number to the lot-specific COA and record the measured values and release decision.
From samples to commercial delivery
Packaging and receiving
Distinguish platelet powder from agglomerated grades. Request size, loose bulk density and sealed packaging details.
Storage and handling
Keep morphology images for the sample and commercial batch. They help trace crushing during handling or dispersion.
Sample and order lead times
Specify colour code, surface treatment or filler grade and whether a single lot is required. Confirm trial quantity, MOQ, retention across lots and arrival.
Questions from the plant
How can a supplier’s conductivity data be related to the actual part?
Use equal specimen thickness, filler loading and forming conditions. Measure the relevant directions separately.
Why is a pad’s measured conductivity lower than the supplier’s value?
Determine whether the value is for powder or a composite. Check test direction, porosity and actual filler volume fraction.
Report a delivery or batch issue
Include the order number, lot number from the package, label photos and inspection records for the affected lot. When retesting, check platelet diameter and thickness, crystal form and purity, test direction.
