Fillers, reinforcement and coupling / ENVO-A026

Kaolin

Product family

Distinguish water-washed, calcined and surface-treated kaolin. Particle size and treatment are often more informative than whiteness alone when selecting a filler.

01 / Applications and trials

Plan a trial for your application

Mineral fillers in plastics

In the same polymer, compare dispersion, surface gloss and impact resistance.

Rubber filling

Compare mixing torque, cure curve and mechanical properties.

02 / Quality and acceptance

Purchase specifications and incoming inspection

Use these properties to compare grades within the product family. Example figures refer to the cited grade or source. Confirm the offered specification, packaging and lead time in the quotation. Burgess Pigment · Technical information for a specified kaolin grade ↗

Property Unit Published or agreed specification Test conditions and checks
Particle size distribution µm Confirm against the offered grade and purchase specification Report D50, the coarse end of the distribution and the dispersion conditions for measurement.
Oil absorption g/100 g Confirm against the offered grade and purchase specification Compare using the same method and investigate differences in porosity or processing.
Whiteness or brightness Specified scale Confirm against the offered grade and purchase specification State the equipment used and whether the material is calcined.

When approving a sample, record the grade, methods, limits and specification revision. On receipt, match the packing lot number to the lot-specific COA and record the measured values and release decision.

03 / Packaging and delivery

From samples to commercial delivery

Packaging and receiving

Specify treatment process, pack net weight and liner. Verify unloading equipment for bulk delivery.

Storage and handling

Retain the lot ID and reference colour panel. Recheck dispersion after moisture-related agglomeration.

Sample and order lead times

Specify colour code, surface treatment or filler grade and whether a single lot is required. Confirm trial quantity, MOQ, retention across lots and arrival.

04 / Troubleshooting

Questions from the plant

Can calcined kaolin directly replace water-washed kaolin by weight?

Compare oil absorption, bulk density and the coarse particle fraction, then test mechanical properties of the part.

Why could a whiter powder give a darker finished part?

Check dispersion under shear, resin colour and process temperature in the same formulation.

Report a delivery or batch issue

Include the order number, lot number from the package, label photos and inspection records for the affected lot. When retesting, check Particle size distribution, Oil absorption, Whiteness or brightness.
